ChatGPT & co. read your website differently from Google. This checklist reveals concrete GEO measures: llms.txt, FAQ structure and schema markup.

llms.txt, FAQ & Schema: The Checklist for AI-Readable Websites

Google reads your website. ChatGPT does too. Just differently. If you want to appear in AI answers in 2026, you need more than good rankings – you need content that a machine understands and cites in seconds. Here is the checklist for it.

Why "AI-readable" is its own criterion

Traditional search engines crawl, index, rank. AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews go a step further: they extract individual statements from your content and construct their own answer from them. If your content isn't clearly structured, the AI will simply pick your competitors.

1. llms.txt – the business card for AI crawlers

llms.txt sits in the root directory of your domain, just like robots.txt, and lists in plain text: who you are, what you offer and which pages are particularly relevant for AI systems. Not an official standard, but a clear signal – and done in five minutes.

Here's how to approach it:

  • Short summary of your company and offering

  • Links to your most important subpages: Services, FAQ, About Us

  • Update regularly whenever your offering changes

2. FAQ sections that actually get cited

AI systems love Q&A formats – they can be lifted directly into an answer. But only if they are specific.

What matters most:

  • Real user questions instead of marketing fluff: "How much does X cost?" instead of "Why are we so great?"

  • Answers in two to three sentences, straight to the point

  • One FAQ per subtopic instead of one giant catch-all FAQ at the bottom of the page

3. Schema markup: structured data as a non-negotiable

Schema markup translates your content into a language that machines understand without interpretation. For SME websites, the most crucial are:

  • FAQPage schema for your FAQ sections

  • Organization schema for address, contact, opening hours

  • Product schema for online shops: price, availability, reviews

  • Article schema for magazine and blog posts

The checklist to tick off

  • llms.txt created and linked

  • FAQ sections with real user questions on each subpage

  • FAQPage schema implemented

  • Organization schema added

  • Clear entity signals: who you are, what you do, where you are based

  • Content updated regularly – freshness counts as a ranking factor for AI systems

Conclusion

AI readability isn't rocket science; it's clean craft: clear structure, genuine FAQs, tidy markup. Get this foundation right, and you're ready for Google and for ChatGPT.
